“That’s just crazy..!”

       The Making Of Hose.

From the initial idea to finally producing the film almost 10 years passed.

When I first came up with the idea the only way to make the film was to shoot on a 16mm animation camera, process and transfer the film, then have a high end post-production company do all the VFX using a system like Henry. The costs were prohibitive and the idea was shelved.

Cut to 10 years later and suddenly I could not only make the film, I could make it at a much higher resolution and do it all myself. All this was as a result of huge advances in the power of desktop computers, Apple’s Final Cut Pro, Adobe’s After Effects and new storage systems. Plus the revolution in Digital Still photography.

Suddenly we were spoilt for choice in how we could shoot, process, edit and create the film. We had to figure out the best way to acquire the frames, edit and output. What camera, what flavor of HD (720p or 1080i) and what would the final deliverable be that we were aiming for?

These are all very important decisions that have to be made before you start. Its worth spending a lot of time figuring this out and doing as much research as you can before hand – you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches later on. The choices we made were particular to our needs and might not suit your project, however I hope that I can give you some insight into why we made these choices and hopefully you might be able to make better choices for yourself…
